Special Project- Community outreach programme
For the year 2007 JJB identified Brickfields as an area of intervention proposing a community outreach programme with the students from GIIS. The theme is Global harmony.
The Jumping JellyBeans have been working since March in the preparation of a performance by the students of GIIS as part of a global event planned by Global Indian International Schools to be held in Singapore on Oct 19th 07.
THEME: ‘Global Harmony’
With “Global Harmony” as the theme, JJB with the students have created a performance and it is designed as a community theatre outreach programme. We felt doing a community project will best portray the convention’s theme of “Global Harmony”.
Twelve students volunteered to go through a journey from March 07. Four outreach interventions are planned. The first being held on Aug 5th in Chinatown area and the last being Malaysia Day celebrated on Sept 16th to be held at Central Market.
There will be 4 students on stilts and it will be a street parade and little ‘performances’ of their improvisation work with some text. These performances will be video documented.
The performance is an original piece created by the students under the guidance of the JJB. Improvisation work combined with research on the different communities populating Brickfields and extended to the country is part of the intense programme.
OBJECTIVES:
• To create awareness of the different communities in the neighbourhood
• To stimulate interaction within the school and its surroundings
• To generate interest in the students on the theme Global Harmony
• To introduce different forms of performing arts to the students
• To present non conventional forms of theatre to different community and stimulate the artistic expression of the individuals.
Special Project- Creative Stars- January to December 2007
In April JJB initiated a project to start classes for special needs adults (18 and above) to teach them the various aspects of the theatre industry. The aim of the project is to arm these individuals with enough knowledge so that they are able to go out and work in this industry in the various capacities that they feel most inclined to.
Classes are conducted once a week on Tuesdays from 9am to 3pm.

A performance with the students is targeted for early 2008. This project will carry on even after the performance as we feel it will take a few years for them to get a full understanding of the industry.

The aim of the project is to create a band and organize one or more evening events targeted to adults with disabilities. JJB refers to a similar concept discovered during their visit to the UK where a big event named the Octopus Club is held in London once a year, targeted to people with disabilities.
